Introduction – Bus Marmara, Shivajinagar

Bus Marmara is one among the many Marmara programmes that we have held so far on various issues in different parts of Bangalore and districts of Karnataka. The Bus Marmara was part of the Bus Prayanikara Vedike Campaign and an awareness programme that was held in seven different public places in the city starting from the Shantinagar Bus Station and culminating at Shivajinagar Bus Station. At each of these destinations, pamphlets were distributed and discussions held with the commuters on issues related to the public transport system – the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation ( BMTC).

The main issues that we focused upon were:

  • Repeated BMTC bus fare hikes
  • Sexual harassment and violence on women in BMTC buses.
  • Install CCTV cameras in BMTC buses and put up stickers related to sexual violence
  • Extending the Black Board limits of BMTC.
  • Reduce the daily bus pass fare.
  • To display the help line phone numbers in BMTC buses to which women can reach out to when sexually harassed

The views gathered from the public through the Bus Marmara will be shared with the officials of BMTC urging them to take immediate and necessary actions.
